100th Birth Anniversary of film director Grigory N. Chukhrai

On May 21, a postcard with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 100th Birth Anniversary of Grigory N. Chukhrai, film director, People’s Artist of the RSFSR, People’s Artist of the USSR, will go into postal circulation.

Grigory N. Chukhrai (1921-2001) was a Soviet and Russian film director and screenwriter, laureate of the Lenin Prize (1961), the People’s Artist of the USSR (1981).

Grigory Chukhray was born in Melitopol (currently, Zaporozhskaya Oblast of Ukraine). During the war, he served in airborne troops and was wounded.
In 1953, he graduated from the Department of general stage management of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), simultaneously starting to work on the A. Dovzhenko film studio in Kiev.

He produced more than 10 films (The Forty-First, Ballad of a Soldier). Over the course of 20 years, Chukhray was a member of the Arts Council of the Mosfilm Studio. In 1966-1971, he gave classes at the VGIK, headed a film director’s workshop. He taught at the Highest Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors. From 1965, he was a permanent secretary of the Cinematographers Union of the USSR.

Titles and awards: the Order for Merit to the Motherland, class 4 (1996), the Order of the Patriotic War, class 1 (1985), the Order of the Patriotic War, class 2 (1945); three Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Red Star (1944), etc.

The original stamp features Chukhray’s portrait, a cine-camera and a clapper-board; the main image shows a production still from the shooting stage of the Untypical Story fiction film.

In addition to the issue of the postcard with a commemorative stamp, JSC Marka will produce special cancels for Moscow and St. Petersburg.
