Arabic Language Day – History and Facts

Arabic Language Day seeks to promote the Arabic language. This day aims to raise awareness about the history and culture surrounding Arabic. It is one of six official languages used by the United Nations and is seen as a pillar of cultural diversity.

Arabic Language Day was established in 2010 by the U.N Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is observed annually on December 18th.

  • Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages. It is spoken by more than 422 million people according to the U.N.
  • Arabic has multiple words for love. Each describes a different stage of the process of falling in love, for example hawa describes the initial attraction between two people.
  • English has borrowed many words from Arabic. Some examples include: alchemy, alcohol, algebra, coffee, and magazine to name a few.
