International Civil Aviation Day – 07 December

The aim of International Civil Aviation Day is to help generate and strengthen worldwide recognition of the significance of International Civil Aviation for the social and economic development of the country. International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is helping States to cooperate and realise a global rapid transit network as the service to all mankind.

The day is celebrated annually but unlike the other international days, the theme of International Civil Aviation Day is selected once in five years. For each of these anniversary years a single theme is chosen and runs for the full four-year interval between them.

Background of International Civil Aviation Day
The first celebration of International Civil Aviation Day was in the year 1994. It was established in the year 1994 as part of ICAO’s 50th-anniversary in Chicago. The day is celebrated to commemorate the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, which established rules for aircraft registration, airspace, safety, sustainability and security. In 1996 the United Nations General Assembly officially recognised December 7 as the International Civil Aviation Day in the UN system.

Significance of International Civil Aviation Day
The International Civil Aviation Day is significant as it helps the states to cooperate and realise a truly global rapid transit network at the service of all mankind. The day aims to create global awareness about international civil aviation. The day also acknowledges the unique role played by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in providing global aviation safety, efficiency, and uniformity. ICAO organises various activities and events like seminars, educational sessions and news announcements. The day underscores the significance of aviation in improving global connectivity as according to the UN report more than 120 million passengers travel by air on a daily basis and the air travel industry supports almost 65.5 million jobs.
