Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid, Kottayam, Kerala

Thazhathanagdi Juma Masjid is one among the most ancient mosques of India. It is believed to be to be the second oldest mosque in India. It was built by Malik Deenar (RA) who was one among the followers of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) to visit India. The mosque is more than 1000 years old.

It is situated on the banks of River Meenachil in Kottayam. It is built in Kerala style of architecture and is a beautiful example of communal harmony . Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is also called as the “Taj Juma Masjid”. The ancestors of this Masjid came and settled in Kottayam, from different parts of Kerala. The Muslims who lived here played an active role in Freedom Struggle and other National Movements.

This mosque is known for its intricate wooden carvings and architecture. The mosque has a square inner courtyard, an exquisitely carved wooden gabled roof, a traditional bathing area and lovely latticed windows making it resemble a temple or a king’s palace. Thazhathangady Juma Masjid in Kerala’s Kotayam opened its doors for women devotees. Muslim women in the right attire can enter the mosque only on the two days, April 24 and May 8. Women will not be allowed to perform rituals inside the mosque. They have separate facilities for the same.

The Mosque timings: 0700 – 1800 hrs.

The Special cover issued on the occasion of Kottayampex 2016 features a colour image of the front facade of the mosque built in Kerala style architecture. The Special pictorial cancellation is a line graphic sketch of the exquisitely carved wooden gabled roof and issued on 04-10-2016.
