The I. Levitan Memorial House-Museum is part of the State Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve in Plyos. It is a small merchant’s house built in 1835 where painters Isaac Levitan, Alexei Stepanov and Sofia Kuvshinnikova lived in the mezzanine two summer seasons (1888 and 1889).
Nowadays, there are two memorial rooms with personal belongings of the artists. The exhibition consists of three sections. The exposition stands in the first hall provide a brief chronicle of Levitan’s life and a narrative about the artist’s life in Plyos, where he wrote about 200 works (including sketches, drawings and rough drawings) including some of his best paintings: Evening on the Volga, Birch Forest, Evening – Golden Plyos, Quiet Abode, After the rain. Plyos. The second hall accommodates paintings by I. Levitan, A. Stepanov and S. Kuvshinnikova.
Today, the Museum has in its possession 23 artworks by I. Levitan, 16 paintings by A. Stepanov, and 11 works by S. Kuvshinnikova. The interior corner contains an exhibition of Levitan’s personal belongings. In the center of the room, there is a portrait of the artist by G. Gutman, donated to the Museum from the funds of the State Tretyakov Gallery. The postage stamp provides an image of the building of the I.
