Considered one of the greatest social reformers and saviors of modern India. He was awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna’, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1958. He is the first Indian in whose lifetime a postage stamp was issued on him. In honor of Karve, Mumbai’s Queen Road was renamed as Maharishi Karve Road.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was a great engineer and diplomat of India. His birthday 15 September is celebrated as Engineer’s Day in India. Dr. M. Visvesvaraya is known to be a world renowned Indian engineer and was one of the principal designers of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad, along with the construction of the Krishna Raj Sagar Dam in Mandya district.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955 and the title of Knighthood by Britain in 1915. The Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore was renamed as Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum in his honour. He is the second Indian in whose lifetime a postage stamp was issued on him.

He was a famous Indian politician. He was one of the prominent leaders of the Indian independence movement, who played a prominent role as the President of the Indian National Congress.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of independent India and one of the political architects who shaped the Republic of India. Apart from being the President, he also worked as a Union Minister in independent India for some time. Due to his popularity all over the country, he was called Rajendra Babu or Deshratna. He was awarded the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1962 and is the third Indian to have a postage stamp issued on him during his lifetime.

Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was a conductor of Indian culture, an eminent educationist, a great philosopher and a devout Hindu thinker. He was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India. His birthday (September 5) is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India.

Honours: Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was awarded the title of Knighthood in 1932, Bharat Ratna in 1954 and Honorary Membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. He is the fourth Indian in whose lifetime a postage stamp was issued on him.

 

VV GIRIVV Giri:

VV Giri or Varahagiri Venkata Giri was a renowned social reformer and the fourth President of the country. V.V. Giri is the only President to be elected as an independent candidate. He was a pioneer in India’s trade union movement and it was due to his tireless efforts that labor force demand and their rights were acquired.

Honor: In the year 1975, he received the Bharat Ratna Award, the country’s highest civilian honor and he is the 5th Indian in whose lifetime a postage stamp was issued on him. In his honour, the National Labor Institute was renamed as VV Giri National Labor Institute in 1995.

Welthy Fisher (nee Housinger) was born on 18th, September 1879 in the town of Rome in the United States of America. In her earlier years she trained for opera singing and was a melodious singer. Her first visit to India was in 1920. After her marriage to Frederick Bohn Fisher, a Methodist Bishop in India, she travel- led extensively in the country. She also had the privilege of meeting Mahatma Gandhi land Rabindranath Tagore. After the death of her husband she dedicated herself to the service of humanity with renewed vigour.

She spent several years and visited several countries to study educational methodology. During the course of her visit to India in 1947, she met Mahatma Gandhi on 15 December 1947. Gandhi had then advised her to go to villages and help the villagers.

Welthy Fisher came back to India in 1952. She started an adult literacy class for the villagers in a verandah of the Agricultural Institute at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh in 1953. She constantly experimented with various teaching aids, preparing and selecting books for the adult neo-literates and developed a literacy kit to equip a teacher to teach 25 students at a time.

Later on she moved from Allahabad to Lucknow, acquired land and, with the help of renowned architect Lauri Baker constructed ‘Saksharta Niketan’ (Literacy House). For twenty years she devoted every minute of her waking hours to the welfare of the Indian villager. In 1973 she handed over the management of’ he institute to the India Literacy Board and went back to the United States, where she is still active in her chosen field of work. She has been honoured with many awards; the prestigious among them are Nehru Literacy Award, Ramon Magsaysay Award, Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) of the University of Syracuse, U.S. Government Special Award on the Inter- national Literacy Day in 1978, UNESCO Literacy Prize, etc.

She was a Roman Catholic nun. There would be no such person in the Indian subcontinent, who is not aware of the name of Mother Teresa, a rich personality of extraordinary personality.

He helped the poor, sick, orphaned and dying people for nearly 45 years and also paved the way for the spread of the Missionaries of Charity. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1962, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and the country’s highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna” in 1980. A special coin of Rs 5 was issued in his name by the Government of India on August 28, 2010.

The name of former Indian player Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is one of the greatest batsmen in the world in the history of cricket.

Honours: Sachin Tendulkar is the first sportsperson and also the youngest person to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. Apart from this, he has also been awarded with Arjuna Award in 1994, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1997, Padma Shri in 1999, Padma Vibhushan Award in 2008. Sachin Tendulkar is the eighth Indian to have a postage stamp issued on him during his lifetime.
