Definitive stamps of Iceland 1925-1937

Pictorial definitive Iceland stamps first appeared in 1925.  These larger  pictorial stamps, featuring Icelandic scenery and history, would eventually replace the portrait definitive stamps, and they would become commonplace in future definitive postage stamp issues.

Definitive stamps of Iceland 1925-1937

The five large-format pictorial definitive stamps shown above were issued on September 12, 1925. The catalog attributes and stamp designs are as follows:

• 07 A.  (Sc. #144) – Landing the Mail.
• 10 A.  (Sc. #145) – View of Reykjavik.
• 20 A.  (Sc. #146) – Museum.
• 35 A.  (Sc. #147) – View of Reykjavik.
• 50 A.  (Sc. #148) – Landing the Mail.

The six small-format pictorial definitive Iceland stamps shown below were issued between December 1931 and May 1932. The common design of these six stamps (Sc. #170-175) features the Gullfoss or Golden Falls, located on the Hvita River in Southwestern Iceland.

Twelve of the portrait definitive stamps of 1920-1922 were re-drawn and re-issued between 1931 and 1933. They are all shown below. These stamps are printed on paper with WMK 114 (crosses), and they are perforated 14 x 14 1/2.

On the re-drawn stamps, the horizontal lines of the portrait and the oval are closer together than on the 1920 stamps, and they are crossed by many fine vertical lines.

40 A. (1931 – Sc. #184) – Claret.
01 K. (1931 – Sc. #185) – Dark Blue & Light Brown.
02 K. (1931 – Sc. #186) – Chocolate & Dark Green.
10 K. (1931 – Sc. #187) – Yellow Green & Black.

High denomination definitive Iceland stamps, with revenue cancellations consisting of a boxed “TOLLUR”, were used to pay the import fees on parcels arriving in Iceland. Stamps with these revenue cancels are only worth a small fraction of the same stamps with postal cancellations.

The two small-format pictorial definitive stamps shown above were issued on June 28, 1935. The catalog attributes and stamp designs are as follows:

10 A. (Sc. #193) – Dynjandi Falls, a series of waterfalls in the West Fjord Region of Iceland.
01 K. (Sc. #194) – Mount Hekla, in Southern Iceland, is Iceland’s most active volcano. The last eruption was in February of 2000.
