A pivotal moment came in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City, advocating for shorter work hours, fair wages, and suffrage. This powerful demonstration laid the groundwork for the first National Woman’s Day in the United States, observed on February 28, 1909.
The idea of an international celebration was born in 1910, when Clara Zetkin proposed an International Women’s Day at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. Over 100 women from 17 countries unanimously supported this initiative, leading to the first IWD being celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
