The Battle of Stalingrad was a major battle of the Great Patriotic War; it lasted from 17 July 1942 to 2 February 1943. The Battle of Stalingrad had two periods in terms of tactical activities: the defensive stage form 17 July till 17 November 1942 aiming at the defense of Stalingrad (since 1961 Volgograd), and the offensive period form 19 November 1942 till 2 February 1943 which resulted in a crashing defeat of the Nazi German forces.
The Soviet victory over the Germans at Stalingrad was the turning point in World War II, it had a significant impact on people’s lives in the invaded areas, brought hope for liberation and encouraged the growth of the resistance movement. The Nazi German offensive towards the East was permanently repulsed at Stalingrad. The victory was a result of invincible stamina, courage and mass heroism of the Soviet soldiers. The postage stamp depicts a bas-relief featuring a group of Soviet soldiers at the Battle of Stalingrad.
