Dr. John Matthai Centre is a pioneering institute in the fields of Information Technology, Economics, Management, Theatre Arts and Music. Dr. John Matthai Centre is a mini campus of the University of Calicut, situated nearly 5 km away from Thrissur town, within the limits of the Thrissur Corporation. The Centre was started in 1973 in Thrissur, as a Regional Centre of the University, in the name of Dr. John Matthai, a celebrated Economist and the First Railway Minister and subsequently the Finance Minister of Republic India. The centre initially offered the Post Graduate Course of MA (Development. Economics). But with the advent of IT revolution, the institution became a centre of excellence in the field of Information Technology. Thus having introduced the courses MCA, MBA & MSc Comp. Science.

Dr. John Matthai Centre is affiliated with The University of Calicut. It is situated at Laloor, a suburban Village five Kilometers away from the heart of Trichur, the cultural capital of Kerala. Its spread over 18 acres of land abound with greenery, where the JMC is housed belonged to Dr. John Matthai, the legendary Hero and one of India’s most famous sons.

​His wife Mrs. Achamma Matthai donated the ancestral building and 18 acres of land to the Calicut University.to start a centre for teaching and research in Economics. The University of Calicut started the Dr. John Matthai Centre at Thrissur in 1976 with the newly started University Department of Economics.
