Special cover released on K. Karunakaran

K. Karunakaran was an Indian politician from Kerala. He belonged to Congress party. He served as the former Chief Minister of Kerala and Home minister in Kerala State Assembly and Cabinet Minister for Industries of Government of India.

He was born on  July 1918 at Chirakkal in Kannur District of Kerala. His parents are Thekkedathu Ramunni Marar and Kannoth Kalyani Amma. He had two elder brothers, Kunjiraman Marar and Balakrishnan Marar and one younger brother, Damodaran Marar. His only sister Devaki died when she was young. He studied at Vadakara LP School and at Chirakkal Raja’s School till eighth standard. He was suffering from eye related disorder and so had to stop his studies for a while. Then he got his Diploma in Design and Drawing at Maharaja Technical Institute with gold medal.

He was elected as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party in 1967. He founded Union Democratic Front in 1970. He was very close to Nehru family. He served as the Chief Minister of Kerala for four times. His political career stretches over five decades and he was elected to Rajya Sabha three times and to Lok Sabha two times. He was elected from Thiruvananthapuram in 1998 and Mukundapuram in 1999 to Lok Sabha. He had to face controversy in Rajan case who was killed by the police at Kakkayam police camp. He died on 23 December 2010 in Thiruvananthapuram. The Prime Minster Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi attended his funeral.
