Sultan Azlan Shah Cup – International men’s field hockey tournament

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is an international men’s field hockey tournament, organized by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation and the International Hockey Federation. It is one of the most prestigious field hockey tournaments held in Malaysia. The origin of the competition dates back to 1983. In the initial days, the competition was biennial, but with its growing popularity and professionalism of the administration, the tournament was made an annual event following 1998. He also represented the home team of Perak.

As of 2016, twenty-five editions of the tournament have been played. Australia is the most successful team with nine titles wins, followed by India with five wins. Australia is also the defending champion of the tournament. The first edition of the tournament was held in 1983 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia contested by five teams. India dominated the tournament from 1985 to 1995, winning the trophy three times out of five. In 2010, India and South Korea have been jointly announced winners with the consent of His Highness Sultan Azlan Shah, after the match was stopped due to bad weather. The tournament is played in a simple round-robin format.

The tournament is named after the ninth emperor Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, Sultan Azlan Shah who was an avid patron of the game and had played field hockey since his school days.
