Tomb of Tutankhamun Discovered 100 Years Ago

Magyar Posta is issuing a special souvenir sheet to mark the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The souvenir sheet was designed by the graphic artist György Kara. The sheets were printed by Pénzjegynyomda Zrt. The new issue will be available at first day post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 11 March 2022, but may also be ordered from Magyar Posta’s online store. The greatest discovery in archaeology to date was undoubtedly the finding of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

After five years of searching, it was discovered by chance on 4 November 1922 by Howard Carter, who had the financial backing of the wealthy English aristocrat Lord Carnarvon. The tomb with four chambers contained a vast haul of priceless artefacts. The most famous find was without doubt the mummy’s gold funerary mask, but the archaeologists also found a gilded throne chair and a pure gold coffin. Tutankhamun still rests in his tomb in a glass case.

On 4 November 2007, 85 years after the tomb was discovered, he was moved from his stone sarcophagus to the glass case. The background of the frame of the souvenir sheet shows a detail of the gold covering of the shrine, on which the nested coffins found inside the sarcophagus are displayed. The funerary mask of Tutankhamun appears on the stamp. The commemorative first day cover shows Howard Carter discovering the tomb. The special postmark features a stylised drawing of the profile of the mask.
